In a North Carolina masonry competition first, the 2019 NC SkillsUSA State Masonry Contest at the Greensboro Coliseum in April was interrupted when a sprinkler head malfunctioned, drenching several contestants and their projects. The entire coliseum was evacuated, disrupting numerous skills competitions involving more than a thousand students. The masonry contest conclusion was delayed by about an hour. NCMCA members and friends spent two days setting up the contest, mixing mortar, tending the contestants, (sopping up water,) judging the projects and cleaning up and disposing of the debris. Some 117 students from twenty-two schools participated.
