Triad Chapter Golf

The Triad Chapter of NCMCA held their 33rd Annual SJO Golf Tournament in June at the Shamrock Golf Club in Burlington.  Shown left to right, Chapter President Anthony McIver, winning team members Jonathan Blackard, Gilmer Hinshaw, Butch Gates, and Jason Hinshaw with Tournament Chairman Dickey Robertson.  Robertson has chaired the tournament every since it began.

 

Winners Visit Metrolina

The Metrolina Chapter recognized Charlotte-area top finishers from the May NCMCA Masonry Apprentice Skills contest at their June meeting.  Chapter President Chris Bruner re-presented award plaques engraved with the winners’ names.  Left to right, First Place / David R Sigmon Award Winner Corey Huneycutt of Alward Masonry; Don Alward of Alward Masonry with the ongoing “David R Sigmon Award” plaque recognizing Huneycutt’s 2010 win for his company; and second place finisher Rhett Hallman of McGee Brothers Company, who won first place in 2009.  So far, though many have tried, no one has won the contest more than once.  Their families accompanied the winners at the meeting.  (Photography by Carson Greif)
   

Lake Norman Outing

Annual Skills Contest at Midland

Twenty-five vocational students and NCMCA apprentices from eight NCMCA member firms participated in the Annual NCMCA Apprentice Masonry Skills Contest in May.  McGee Brothers Company hosted the contest at their Midland, NC maintenance facility, with hosting assistance from Mac’s Restaurant, Koontz Masonry and Brick Yard, LTD.   NCMCA member firms provided materials, equipment, volunteers and cash to provide every contestant with a selection of masonry tools and a cash prize.  The 2011 contest will be May 21st tentatively planned for Custom Brick & Supply Company in Raleigh.

Concord Construction Career Fair

NC_DOT_Trade_Fair_2010_WEBThe Metrolina Chapter of NCMCA spent three days in April manning a hands-on masonry exhibit as part of the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s 26th High School Construction Career Days Fair in Concord.  Chapter President Chris Bruner expressed appreciation to the following individuals and companies for their participation: Larry McGee and Tom Gatz with McGee Brothers; Bruce Mullis; Terry Ward, Steve Starnes and Andy Bell with Tucker Kirby Company; Kent Cloninger with Cunningham Brick; Carson Greif with Boral Bricks; Mike Weaver with Adams Products; and Jeremy Eudy, Gates Construction. He thanked Gates Construction for their help in furnishing materials and equipment for the event. Bruner reported they had a very busy three days with kids coming in from local school systems to get introduced to several aspects of construction. “We had an area set up outside and had the boys and girls laying brick. There were quite a few that you could tell were currently taking masonry classes but we also had some that had never done it before.
